Straight after treatment
Your appointment itself takes around fifteen minutes. You will walk out with small raised bumps at each injection site, a bit like tiny insect bites, and possibly some mild redness.
Those bumps settle within fifteen to thirty minutes. They are simply the product sitting under the skin before it disperses, and they are not an indication of anything going wrong.
You can drive yourself home. You can go back to work. Most of our Morpeth patients book an appointment around something else in their day, and nobody they see afterwards tends to notice.
The first four hours
This is the window that matters most.
Stay upright. No lying flat, no leaning your face into a pillow, no naps. Keep your head above your heart until the four hours are up.
Do not touch, rub or massage the treatment sites, and hold off on make up over the injection points. If you wear glasses, that is fine, but avoid pressing anything firmly against the treated skin.
Gentle facial movement is actually encouraged. Frowning, raising your brows and squinting a few times over the first hour is thought to help the product settle into the facial muscles you want it working on.
The first 24 hours
Avoid alcohol, strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot yoga and long hot baths. Anything that significantly raises your body temperature or blood flow to the face is best postponed by a day.
You may notice a mild headache or a feeling of tightness across the forehead. Both are common in the first day or two and settle on their own. Paracetamol is fine if you need it.
Small bruises can appear at injection sites, particularly around the eyes where the skin is thinnest. They are usually minor and cover easily with make up after the first 24 hours.
Days three to five
This is when you will start to notice something.
Movement in the treated muscles begins to soften. Most people see the first changes between day three and day five, though timing varies a little by area. Crow's feet often respond slightly earlier, forehead lines slightly later, and bunny lines across the nose somewhere in between.
It will not be even at this stage, and it is not meant to be. One side often responds before the other. This is the point at which people occasionally panic and message us thinking something has gone wrong, so it is worth saying plainly: asymmetry at day four means nothing. The picture is still developing.
Days seven to fourteen
By the end of the second week, your result has fully settled. What you see at day fourteen is what you have got for the next few months.
Wrinkles caused by movement will look softened, while your facial expressions stay your own. Your face still moves, and if we have judged your dose well it moves in a way that looks like you rather than like nothing at all. Deeper lines that were already visible at rest will look lighter rather than gone, because botulinum toxin works on the muscle rather than the crease itself.
Judging your result
Day fourteen is the point to form an opinion, and not before.
Everything up to then is a work in progress, which is why we would gently discourage you from studying your forehead in the bathroom mirror on day five and drawing conclusions. Plenty of patients who are convinced at day four that nothing has happened are perfectly happy by day twelve.
Once you are at the two week mark, take a proper look in good daylight rather than under a bathroom light, and at your face at rest as well as moving. If something has not turned out how you expected, get in touch and tell us. We would always rather hear from you than have you sit on it for three months and quietly not come back.
Some clinics book everyone in for a routine review appointment. We take a slightly different view: rather than bringing every patient back regardless, we would rather you contact us if something is not right, and we will see you. Either way, the point is the same, which is that you should never feel stuck with a result you are unhappy with.
It is also worth noting what you thought of the result, honestly, because that is what shapes your treatment plan next time. Anti-wrinkle treatment is not a single dose repeated identically. Your practitioner is working with your own facial anatomy, and knowing that you felt your brows were a little heavy, or that you wanted more movement kept in the forehead, is how the next dose gets adjusted to suit you better.
When to contact us sooner
Most of what happens after Botox is unremarkable, but this is the safety information worth knowing. A few things are worth a phone call rather than a wait:
- A drooping eyelid or a noticeably heavy brow
- Bruising that is spreading or unusually painful rather than settling
- Any sign of infection at an injection site, such as heat, increasing redness or discharge
- Difficulty with vision, swallowing or breathing, which is rare but requires immediate medical attention
Call the clinic and speak to us. We would far rather look at something that turns out to be nothing.
Keeping your results
Botox typically lasts three to four months, and the single biggest factor in maintaining a good result is booking follow-up treatments before movement has fully returned rather than long after.
Sun protection genuinely helps, as does not smoking and staying hydrated, though none of these will extend the product itself by much. Consistency does more than anything else. Patients who treat regularly often find their intervals lengthen over time as the treated muscles weaken.
If lines are still visible when your face is completely still, or if your concern is lost volume rather than movement, Botox alone will not solve it. Dermal filler restores volume and structure, while skin treatments improve texture and quality. Plenty of patients end up combining injectable treatments as part of one plan, and a good consultation should tell you honestly which of them you actually need.
Book a Botox consultation in Northumberland
Every treatment at our Morpeth clinic is nurse-led and carried out by Nurse Ness Abbey and her team. You leave with written aftercare and a way to reach us if anything concerns you. That is what patient-focused care looks like in practice: an injector who explains what to expect before you commit, and who is still contactable a fortnight later.
You can read more about our full range of Botox treatments in Northumberland, or book a consultation and we will talk through what your treatment would involve from start to finish.
