How Does Botox Help with Nasolabial Folds and Marionette Lines?

At Oracle Aesthetics, led by Nurse Ness, we offer a range of non-surgical treatments designed to help patients maintain a youthful appearance. One of the most common concerns for those seeking cosmetic treatments are Nasolabial Lines (also known as smile lines or laugh lines) and Marionette Lines (sometimes referred to as puppet lines). These dynamic lines can create an aged look, but with the help of Botox and dermal filler treatments, you can achieve a smoother, rejuvenated appearance.

Ness performs Botox and dermal filler treatments for Nasolabial and Marionette Lines at our clinics in both Newcastle and Carlisle, offering expert care to restore youthful contours and enhance your natural beauty.

Nasolabial Folds vs Marionette Lines: What's the Difference?

They often appear together but they are not the same. Nasolabial folds, also known as smile lines or laugh lines, run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth, and are mainly caused by midface volume loss as the cheeks descend with age.

Marionette lines run from the corners of the mouth down towards the chin, and are driven by both volume loss and a small muscle, the depressor anguli oris (DAO), that pulls the mouth corners down, which can give a sad or downturned look at rest.

In short: nasolabial folds run nose to mouth, marionette lines run mouth to chin. That difference matters, because it changes the best way to treat each one.

How Nasolabial Folds and Marionette Lines Are Treated

Severity

What It Looks Like

Typical Treatment Approach

Mild

Lines visible mainly on movement, skin still fairly firm

Skin-quality treatments like Profhilo or skin boosters to improve hydration and firmness, sometimes microneedling for texture

Moderate

Lines visible at rest, some volume loss

Dermal filler to restore volume and soften the crease, often with a skin-quality treatment alongside

Severe

Deep, set lines with noticeable volume loss or lower-face descent

Dermal filler for direct correction, often combined with collagen stimulation (such as Sculptra) and, for marionette lines, a small amount of anti-wrinkle treatment to relax the DAO muscle

These are general guides, not fixed rules. The right approach depends on your individual anatomy, which is why every treatment at Oracle Clinics begins with a full assessment. In many cases the best result comes from combining treatments rather than relying on one alone.

A note on marionette lines

Because marionette lines are partly caused by the DAO muscle pulling the mouth corners down, they sometimes respond well to a small, carefully placed dose of anti-wrinkle treatment to relax that muscle, used alongside filler rather than instead of it. This is a good example of why the two line types are not always treated identically, and why an experienced, anatomy-led practitioner matters. Relaxing the DAO must be done precisely, as poor technique can affect the smile.

What to Expect During and After Treatment

Botulinum toxin injections are a quick and easy procedure. The procedure time is typically under 30 minutes, making it convenient for those with busy schedules. Numbing cream may be applied to the injection sites to ensure comfort during the procedure.

Recovery time is minimal, and most patients experience only common side effects, such as minor redness or swelling. These side effects usually resolve within a couple of days. As with any medical treatment, there is a small risk of allergic reactions or more severe side effects, but these are rare when administered by an experienced practitioner like Nurse Ness.

To maintain the results, it’s important to follow post-treatment care instructions, such as avoiding strenuous exercise and sun exposure for a few days after your session. Incorporating a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet, plenty of water, and protecting your skin from sun damage will also help to extend the longevity of your results and support optimal skin health.

Is Botox Right for You?

Whether you’re just beginning to notice the appearance of lines or you’ve been dealing with deep wrinkles for years, Botox may be an ideal solution for you. During your consultation at Oracle Aesthetics, Nurse Ness will assess your facial anatomy, skin type, and overall health to determine if Botox, combined with other treatment options like cheek fillers or skin boosters, can help you achieve your desired results.

Botox is a versatile treatment that can enhance your natural expression lines without altering your ability to smile, laugh, or express emotions. It’s an excellent way to soften the effects of the natural ageing process while still looking like yourself.

At Oracle Aesthetics, we are dedicated to providing our patients with the highest quality non-surgical treatments that deliver natural and rejuvenating results.
