Getting home
Book your appointment with the journey in mind. You will be fine to drive, but you may be a little swollen and your lips or cheeks may feel odd and tight.
If you are heading back to somewhere like Alnwick, Berwick or the far north of the county, avoid scheduling treatment late in the day when you would be driving home in the dark and cold. A quiet evening at home afterwards is better than a long, awkward journey.
Do not book anything social for the same evening. It sounds obvious and people do it constantly.
Days two and three
Swelling usually peaks around 24 to 48 hours after treatment and then falls away quickly. This is the stage where people worry.
Your face may look uneven. One side may be more swollen than the other. Lips in particular can look considerably fuller than the result you agreed. This is almost always swelling rather than the filler itself, and it is one of the most common side effects of any injectable treatment.
Bruising is common, especially around the lips and under the eyes, and typically clears within seven to ten days. Once the injection sites have closed you can cover it with makeup.
How recovery differs by area
Not all facial fillers behave the same way afterwards. How quickly you settle depends heavily on the treatment area, because facial anatomy varies enormously across the face.
- Lip fillers swell the most and the most visibly. The tissue is mobile, well supplied with blood and has nowhere to hide. Expect two to three days of looking fuller than you intended.
- Tear troughs bruise easily and can hold fluid for longer than other areas. Sleeping propped up matters more here than anywhere else.
- Mid-face filler in the cheeks tends to settle quickly and quietly, since the volume is placed deeper and the skin is thicker.
- Chin and jawline are usually the least dramatic, with firmness rather than obvious swelling.
If your practitioner treated more than one area, expect them to settle at different rates. That is normal and not a sign anything has gone wrong.
The first two weeks
By day four or five, most swelling has gone. The product continues to integrate with your tissue over the following ten days.
Small lumps or firm areas during this period are usually normal and soften on their own. Do not start massaging them unless your practitioner has specifically advised it, because pressure applied at the wrong time can move product where you do not want it.
Do not judge your result, and do not book a top up, before the two week mark. Most clinics offer a review appointment at around two weeks for precisely this reason.
What is normal and what is not
Normal: swelling, tenderness, bruising, small lumps, mild asymmetry in the first fortnight, and a feeling of tightness.
Contact the clinic straight away if you notice:
- Severe pain, or pain that worsens rather than settles
- Skin that turns white, grey, blue or blotchy
- Unusual coldness in the treated area
- Any change in your vision
- Spreading redness, heat or discharge, which can indicate infection
- Symptoms appearing days or weeks later, such as firm nodules or swelling
These are uncommon, but they need prompt attention rather than a wait and see approach. Ring rather than emailing, and do not wait for your next appointment.
Being further from your clinic
Distance is not a reason to avoid treatment, but it is a reason to prepare.
Before you leave the clinic, make sure you have a direct contact number that works outside normal hours, and that you know which aesthetic practitioner to speak to. Ask whether the clinic keeps hyaluronidase on site and how quickly you could be seen if something went wrong.
Take a photograph of the treated area the evening of your appointment. If you do need to describe a change over the phone, having a baseline is genuinely useful.
Any clinic that cannot answer these questions clearly is not the right clinic, whatever the distance.
Making your filler last
Longevity is not fixed. Two people given identical filler injections on the same day can be six months apart by the time it fades, and lifestyle accounts for most of that gap.
- Wear sunscreen daily. UV breaks down hyaluronic acid fillers and ages the surrounding skin. This applies in Northumberland in March as much as it does on holiday.
- Stay hydrated. Hyaluronic acid binds water, so dehydration shows.
- Do not smoke. It accelerates collagen breakdown and shortens how long injectables last.
- Look after your skin barrier, particularly if you spend time outdoors in wind and cold.
- Book maintenance before it disappears completely. Topping up while some volume remains usually costs less than starting again.
